There are many different theories about the history of Tabi Shoes, but the origin of Tabi Shoes is said to be that they were originally used as socks to wear traditional Japanese footwear such as geta and zori, but were replaced with thicker fabric and soles so that they could be worn outdoors. The shape of the tabi is unique, with the thumb and the other toes separated from each other. Thanks to this feature, they allow the foot to stay firmly on the ground and feel as comfortable as walking barefoot. In the early Edo period, Tabi was made of leather to protect the feet. It is said that it was made of cotton because the price of leather soared due to the big fire in Edo in 1657, and it became popular among ordinary people because of the comfort of cotton. In the early Meiji period, the soles of tabi were made of rubber, and they became the "jikatabi" we see today. In order to close the heel part, there is a metal called Kohaze which is shaped like a nail of a hand, and it is used to hook on the opposite string and fix the ankle part. It was made in the Edo era, but since it was made of gold or ivory, ordinary people used a string to fix the ankles, but it became popular among the general public in the Meiji era when it was made of metals. Nowadays, there are various kinds of jikatabi, such as ones with air in the soles, ones with sneaker-like design, and ones made of highly designed fabric. They are worn by various people as one of the fashionable shoes in daily life, as well as health shoes for people who are suffering from leg disorders such as hallux valgus, besides agricultural work, civil engineering, and construction work. The jikatabi sold at KOMARI are individually made by Japanese craftsmen. This product uses the vulcanized manufacturing method which is rare and valuable now. This manufacturing method of vulcanizing is a traditional manufacturing method for making sneakers. The process of making jikatabi starts with cutting the fabric. Depending on how the fabric is cut, it will greatly affect the appearance of the jikatabi, so all parts are cut by hand. After cutting, each part will be sewed with a sewing machine. After each part is sewed, the body is shaped to fit the shoe shape, and the insole is fixed. This work is one of the important processes to determine the wearing comfort and is done by craftsmen one by one. After the shape is adjusted and the rubber soles are bonded, the adhesive is applied to the edge of the shoes, and it is pressed by the vulcanizing method. By adding sulfur to the rubber in a 120-degree iron pot and causing a chemical reaction, the rubber of the sole and the main body part are firmly pressed together, and a durable jikatabi that the sole does not come off easily is completed. And, as the last finishing, the craftsmen check the condition of each jikatabi and it is done.
